A Review of Common Late Roman Coin Types

as commonly found in A.C.E. uncleaned coin lots

#4 Spes Reipublice

As in the state supported lotteries, the hobby of searching uncleaned coins has its winners and its losers. Of all Roman coins, this type has to be near the bottom of the heap. The reverse shows the Emperor standing and holding a globe. The style and workmanship suggest the fact that the coins were issued in a great rush to supply millions of spendable units with little regard for quality. The type is relatively common but not nearly as numerous as the three listed higher up on this list. Unfortunately, the design is not nearly as interesting as, for example, the Falling Horseman type. On the other hand, these only have two rulers to consider and the two are easily separated by the portraits that show either Constantius II (with diadem) or Julian II as Caesar (bareheaded). Whatever we may think of Julian II as Augustus, we can be glad he ended the issue these tiny coins.
