BONI EVENTVC Following the announcement of Septimius' 194 AD consulship but before they settled on the standard 'IMPCAELSEPSEVPERTAVGIICO' this mint experimented with several legend variations. The legend ending 'IICO' is rather rare. The reverse shows a 'C' in place of the expected 'S' reading BONI EVENTVC .

CERER FRVG 'IIC' is merely scarce. This die shows a distinctive die flaw at 1 o'clock.

FORTVNAE REREDVC Another coin from the same obverse die has an extra RE reading FORTVN REREDVC.

MAREI VICT This reverse spelling is listed in the Reka Devnia hoard but not with the COS obverse. This is the same obverse die as the Aeternitas coin (below).

AETERNITAS AS The first variety of the moon and stars reverse used the legend found on coins of Pescennius Niger of this type.

VICTOR IVST AVG Another early legend variety ends 'COSI' with enough dies certain that the chance of erroneous readings due to small flans or poor strikes are eliminated. The die shown here (misspelling 'PEPT' for 'PERT') is known used with at least ten reverse types. Included is the very rare type copied from Pescennius Niger 'VICTORIVSTAVG'. This coin was the subject of My Favorite Coin.

FELICITAS TEMPO Another coin from the same obverse die shows the grain ear and crossed cornucopia type.

RSC68a IMP CAE L SEP SEV PERT AVG COS I

BONI EVENTVS Another COS I die correctly spells PERT and shows a prominent period in the forced break in the legend (SE.V). The Boni Eventus reverse is among the more common types of this period.

C173 IMP CAE L SEP SEV PERT AVG COS I

FORTVN REDVC This specimen is on too small a flan to prove the die never had the second stroke but other specimens clearly show this as another certain COS I die. The reverse is unusual in that the chair shows an X support underneath. All of the half dozen coins I have seen from this obverse die seem to be struck in more base silver than used with the other COS I dies.

LIRERAL AVG Another coin from the same obverse die as the above (C173) clearly shows this is a certain COS I die. The reverse legend makes the common error substituting an R for the B in LIBERAL.
